Portland Monthly August 2012

THE TEMPERATURE is climbing. The Prius is packed with a picnic spread and cold drinks. The iPod blasts the Beach Boys’ “Surfin’ Safari.” The river beckons. Your only “deadline” is sunset. This is summer. Finding the right swimming hole is one thing. But taking your day on the water from so-so summer excursion to the highlight of the season requires a little planning and the right packing. Burnish the memory with these seven local good-time boosters.

Pink Carpet Project:
Portland (and Seattle) Fashion Stand with Planned Parenthood

http://www.pinkcarpetproject.com/

On February 1st, we heard the news that Susan G. Komen was going to cut funding to Planned Parenthood’s preventative clinical breast exams to uninsured women. Although they have reversed their decision, the Seattle fashion community was inspired to come together to show our support to Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest. Four weeks later with 14 designers, 60 models, 30 hairstylists & makeup artists, 40 volunteers, 10 performers, 45 sponsors and 200 attendees, Seattle came together to stand with Planned Parenthood, and it was pretty amazing.

Now, we’re bringing the Pink Carpet Project to Portland.

Emceed by the dynamic and fashionable duo: Eden Dawn, fashion editor of Portland Monthly Magazine, and the Mercury’s Marjorie Skinner, the Pink Carpet Project will present collections by both Seattle and Portland’s top designers. Event proceeds will go to benefit Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette.

Clever Nettle Product Review, July 2012

http://www.clevernettle.com/blog/?p=4173

I’ll start with the only Portland-based company in the bunch, Sidlab. They’re a wholesale hair product company (meaning you can find their products at salons, but not in the drugstore, etc.) and they have a bunch of different hair products, all paraben-free, which is awesome. They sent me a ton of samples, and having it all at my disposal really inspired me to try different styling ideas instead of just having it down all the time. My two favorites are the Magic dry shampoo and the Rain Drops argan oil treatment. My hair definitely needs a little extra oil/moisture since I started bleaching it, and this one is mellow and light and makes my hair soft. The dry shampoo is the most amazing dry shampoo I have ever tried, it’s a totally clear spray (like hairspray) and it absorbs all the unwanted oiliness and makes your hair look totally clean again. If you’re sick of the powder variety of dry shampoos, seriously try this. It worked really well!

Hair Apparent

Portland Picks

This morning we looked in the mirror… and saw Gene Simmons. Somehow his hair helmet had appeared during the night and attached itself like an angry raccoon. A major conditioning treatment was in order … apparently we had been bad to our hair.

Seattle Picks

We want to use “clean” products when it comes to our hair. No parabens, no propylene glycol, no sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, but it also has to be really glamorous. We’re not cavewomen!

sidlab brings style and substance together in all of their products, but our latest obsession is the “mend” hair repair. It allows your hair to repair itself and absorb the major “mend” protein and moisture… just in case you cheat with some naughty products.

Thank goodness for sidlab’s paraben-free “mend” hair repair. It allows your hair to baby itself and absorb the major “mend” protein and moisture … just in case you cheat with some naughty products.

rain drops in ABOUT FACE, Spring 2012

Article by Deborah Haynes

Q: I heard how great argan oil is for the hair. I tried it, but when I use it my dry hair gets oily looking. What gives?

A: I’ve been in your oily shoes. I am a self-proclaimed hair product fanatic. I will try anything to satisfy my hair hunger. Moroccan Oil is the original, and it’s fantastic at creating smooth, radiant looking hair. However, I only use it as a deep treatment every once in awhile. Only those of you with curly or coarse hair can use it on a regular basis. That’s not me: fine and straight is my mane. My search continued. Then a friend gave me rain drops by sidlab. This argan oil is weightless. Hair is left smooth, shiny and UV protected regardless of your hair texture. I use it as my blowout serum, and then I use the leftover oil on my hands to smooth out the flyaways. A must try.

Magic Dry Shampoo

In between washes I swear by Sidlab “Magic” Dry Shampoo. Based out of Portland, Oregon this line is sulfate and paraben-free and the products are amazing! The Magic Dry shampoo is clear (which I love!) and it instantly absorbs oil and adds volume to your hair without leaving product build-up behind. This is one product I would order by the case if I had room to store it!

latest-hairstyles.com askes stylist and salon owner Rob Horton of hairsomething.com What is your favorite fall hair color product?

Sidlab raindrops can’t be beat. It has the highest concentration of argon oil, which means less is more. Yes, there are other argon oils on the market but not this concentrated, and not with the magical powers sidlab puts into their products. It brings amazing shine to all my colors. My tip: put it in when the hair is wet! The bow dryer’s heat infuses the healing properties into the hair shaft while the residual oils shine that beautiful color all day all the while protecting the hair from the sun’s damaging rays.”
